Sedation Options
Most children are calm, comfortable and confident in a paediatric dental office. Our office is designed for young people, and paediatric dentists have specialist training in caring for infants, children, adolescents and persons with special needs. Our staff members choose to work in a paediatric dental office because they like children and want to cater to their special needs. These elements combine to make your child feel relaxed and special.
Nitrous Oxide – Happy gas
Nitrous gas, commonly known as happy gas, is a combination of nitrogen and oxygen and is administered to the patient with a lightweight facial mask. It’s a safe and effective way to help alleviate anxiety and stress during treatment, and also decreases the gag reflex.
Happy gas is widely regarded as the safest sedative being used in the dental industry. It works almost instantaneously and the effects are quickly reversed after the treatment. Afterwards, the child is free to go back to school or continue daily activities without feeling any residual effects.
General Anaesthesia – Sleep dentistry
General anaesthesia enables your child to undergo all treatment in one, stress-free appointment, with no memory of the procedure. This this ideal for children who are unable to cooperate, or require extensive treatment which would normally require multiple appointments. Performing all treatment at one appointment means also less time off school and work.
POSSIBLE PATIENTS FOR PEDIATRIC SEDATION OR ANAESTHESIA ARE:
- Infants and toddlers
- Children that have very demanding dental treatment requirements
- Children that are very apprehensive
- Children with strong gag reflexes
- Children with traumatic experiences
- Children that have problems with tools and smells associated to dentistry
- Children with special needs
At the consultation, we will discuss sedation options as necessary for your child. They will help you find which option may be best for your child to have a good experience at the dentist.
